Brie Larson is ready to take on the universe as Captain Marvel, but this film's timeline might leave you guessing. It's set in the 1990s and covers a period in the Marvel cinematic universe that hasn't previously been covered. The question is - will Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel have the same success as DC's Wonder Woman?
Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel. Now, we all know that Marvel Studios has never been shy about re-working origin stories and super powers for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). So, this movie will present Ms. Marvel as Captain Marvel. There is also not much of a mention of Mar-vell - the original Captain Marvel warrior from the Kree homeworld other than the fact that Jude Law will play him in some capacity.
According to the cast list and trailer, we'll also see Nick Fury in a supporting role. His character is played by Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel comicbook fans will note that the original Nick Fury looked nothing like Jackson. (Conventions be damned.)
I'd love to see Samuel L. Jackson play the role of Chef from my own book series SERANDES: Corporation City. He's a talented character actor.
Captain Marvel is arguably the most powerful Marvel superhero, akin to DC's Superman. However, if fans are eager to see Danvers face off against Thanos and bring back the dead superheroes from Avengers, you'll have to wait a while. The Captain marvel movie isn't set in that same time frame. So, Captain Marvel will have a test run of her own against different galactic conquerors and we'll probably see her face off against Thanos in a much-later instalment.
Female superheroes have had a good run thus far. Wonder Woman was the highest-selling film from the DC Universe and easily ranked the most popular with diehard fans. It's my assumption that Marvel Studios is trying to recreate their own version of that success with Larson's Captain Marvel.
We'll find out on March of 2019, but feast your eyes on the new official trailer in the meantime.
