Sometimes, the best stories come in bite-sized pieces. This could be a scary Tweet or a 1,000 word personal narrative about falling in love. There's an art to crafting quality flash fiction and Solari Publishing loves the stuff. So, here's a Flash Fiction story for your Friday dentist appointment.
Club Night by Frederick S. Blackmon
Outside a nightclub entrance, thumping music leaked onto the sidewalk. Shiny cars and limousines pulled up from all directions, filling the parking area from the street. It was Halloween night and a tangible electricity was in the air. People lined up along the wall and loitered in the street. Some wore colorful costumes that featured bright neon colors, while others wore ghoulish masks and makeup.
A beautiful, young girl waited impatiently outside the club with her hand on her hip. She wore a sexy maid’s outfit, complete with a feather duster and short miniskirt. From a nearby alley, a sleazy thug in all black attire approached her with a menacing look on his face. She tried to avoid eye contact, but he began lethargically staggering her way. Just then, Matt McCafferty pulled up on his motorcycle, leaping off near the young girl. He surveyed the night club scene, removing his dark shades.
He wasn’t wearing a costume; he wore leather boots and a loose-fitting jacket instead. The stumbling thug had already reached the young girl and put a heavy arm around her shoulder.
“Looks like I already found my dance partner,” he breathed in her ear. Matt casually approached them. While the man’s eyelids shaded in a drunken stupor, Matt ducked the young girl’s head down and swirled her out of the thug’s embrace, replacing her beautiful face with his own.
“Mind if I cut in,” he commented slyly. “The girl’s with me.”
“What!? Hey!!”
Matt shoved the guy off and he continued to stagger away, looking for another vulnerable woman to menace. The young girl in the maid’s outfit pouted her lips and looked at Matt with a playful grin.
“You’re late.”
“I know, Erica. I’m sorry,” he begged. “Happy Halloween!”
He pulled Erica close for a kiss and it knocked all the fight out of her. They crossed the street together, arm in arm. The line near the entrance had nearly doubled in just a few minutes, but Matt walked right up to the front door. With little more than a head nod to the bouncer, Erica and Matt were admitted to the club.
